When did you start Pilates and how did you first hear about this method of exercise? What inspired you to begin? I believe I began Pilates 3-4 months ago. From my previous back injuries, I had heard that Pilates and Yoga were really helpful for those kind of injuries. The mind/body connection also appealed to me. I wanted something that would truly help me get stronger, where I could avoid further devastating injury. I was tired of the short-term "band aids." Plus, Jennifer Aniston is a walking advertisement for Pilates!
You have been taking private sessions twice a week and group classes only occasionally…why is that and what have the benefits been?
I wished to take private lessons because of the severity of my previous back injuries that changed my whole world upside down. I wanted individual attention to ensure I wasn't going to do anything that would hurt me and cause me to get injured again, and to help the constant aching. Instead, I wanted to work on gaining strength in those problem areas in a proper, gradual fashion that Carolyn would advise; and she's been fantastic! I am very thankful.
It has been about 3 months since you took your first Pilates session. Do you feel that you are meeting your goals and expectations?
I feel definite progress with my posture, self-awareness of my posture and form in everything I do, increased strength jn my core muscles, improved flexibility, and finally hope that I can prevent further injury. I understand when Carolyn describes "isolated motion" to me more than ever. In addition, I have been progressing towards flexion exercises that I was not able to do at the beginning. After my last injury, I never truly gained strength back in my left ankle muscle. Trying to stand on my toes on that foot was impossible. The other day, I tried, and although I wasn't ready for ballet, I could do it! Small steps toward achievement of big goals. It's not a race when its about long-term health.
A note from the studio: Cari has been dedicated and consistent with her sessions. It makes us so happy to hear her say that she finally has hope that she can overcome her pain and prevent future injuries. We are thankful everyday for the opportunities we have to help others be strong and healthy.
