As we began “the aging process” we noticed changes in ourselves and each other. Posture was poor. Stamina was decreasing. Aches were beginning earlier and lasting longer.
Having experienced “gym exercises” at various centers and physical and aqua therapies, and finding them inconvenient and impersonal, we looked for a different solution. We live in Marlborough and drove by the Marlborough Pilates Studio daily. One day we walked in, curious, and not at all certain this would be a good fit for us. We spoke with Mary Beth and signed up for a session. We now, happily, have enjoyed our weekly semi private sessions for two years
What benefits have you experienced?
We have experienced so many apparent benefits. I have had chronic back pain for several years due to displaced spinal vertebrae, hence the wide range of therapies I have sought. I did not expect my back to improve so much. Concentrated core muscle strength is what I was looking for, and the Pilates exercises gave that to me at a higher and more consistent level. I wish I had known about this years ago. My comfort level when doing daily activities is much improved.
My husband Bill, has spinal stenosis, with subsequent leg muscle weakness and gait imbalance. Again, core muscle strength! He stands taller, walks more easily, has much more confidence and a lot less fear about falling. We also know we’re taking responsibility for maintaining our health, and that feels good!!
What do find most challenging about Pilates?
Pilates is challenging and fun. I need to be mindful that back exercises have to be done correctly.
This is where our wonderful instructor comes in to supervise, instruct, and support. Bill has very much improved his “tabletop” position with minimal help. He admits he dreaded this position two years before.
What has surprised you most about your experience in doing Pilates at Marlborough Pilates Studio Plus?
We have been surprised by how much we have improved our posture, our core strength, agility, and resilience. We are also surprised by the fact that we actually look forward to our weekly scheduled classes, due not in a small way to the personality and professionalism of our instructor.
If you could get two friends or family members to do Pilates who would they be and why? We have a friend, who in his younger days was a marathon runner. He now requires braces on each leg to walk. Pilates may not correct his walking issues, but would, I believe help his balance and confidence.
A relative, a recent widow, experiences foot neuropathy from chemotherapy for breast cancer 18 years ago. She appears much older than she is. I so want her to do Pilates!!
In fact, we tell many people about our good experience, hoping to spread the word. As we age, we are changing, but now, for the better.
Thank you, Joe Pilates!
Thank you, Mary Beth!
A note from the studio: Bill and Joyce are such a joy to work with. They are such a sweet couple who truly love and care about each other. They motivate each other to stay healthy and they are obviously happy. We are thrilled that Marlborough Pilates Studio Plus has such an important place in their lives.
