When did you start Pilates?
"I began Pilates in 2015 as a way to help my husband deal with degenerative back disease. We began with a private couple's lesson. I was impressed with how Mary Beth personalized the experience including making modifications for my husband to meet his needs. Although my husband chose not to stay with Pilates, I was hooked and now try to attend at least 2 classes a week -and wish I could do more."
What inspired you to begin?
"After years and years of procrastinating about regular exercise I discovered Pilates and have finally found a regimen that I love. In addition to trying multiple different diets over the years (to no avail), I have also experimented with a variety of exercise programs. Nothing stuck. Nothing was fun and everything I tried was incredibly boring.
With the advent of grandchildren I began to think seriously about how I can better position myself to lead a healthy life into my later years. My motivation increased when I thought about being around to enjoy them through their many stages of life. This inspiration came at about the time I was introduced to Marlborough Pilates. It was meant to be."
What have you found most beneficial about Pilates?
"The women at Marlborough Pilates are in my head all the time. Whether it is Carolyn telling me to "turn on my brace" or "sit like you are sitting on eggs" or Mary Beth telling me to "reach myself tall", I have integrated the Pilates way into my life. Driving in the car, sitting at my desk or lying in the dentist's chair, I am daily consciously strengthening my core and it feels good. While attending a class I find any stress from the day is put aside. My focus is totally on how I move my body as I develop balance, flexibility and strength. Boring - never. Energizing - always."
What would you say to someone who is thinking about trying Pilates, but thinks she/he is too busy, or is intimidated to give it a try?
"No question - go for it! If your comfort level is with something more private - try a private session. If this doesn't work for you, be assured that every class has participants at different levels and the process is modified to fit you where you are. I have never felt uncomfortable in spite of my inexperience and always leave a session "feeling better when I leave than when I walked in the door."
