Around 3 years ago, my friend Sue invited me to try a Pilates class at Marlborough Pilates Studio Plus. I'm the type of person who needs variety in my exercise routine and I love trying new things, so I decided to take a class and try it out. Needless to say, I was hooked!
What do you find most challenging about the workouts?
The most challenging part of Pilates is for me to focus on the muscle work by not letting my flexibility take over. By holding back on my flexibility and shortening my range of motion, I find I can isolate the muscle and get the most of my workout. I have found out that sometimes, less is more!
Have your family and friends noticed anything different about you since you started practicing Pilates regularly?
My husband has noticed a transformation in me physically, mentally, and emotionally since I started taking Pilates. He has noticed how more relaxed and less stressed I am after I go to class. On the few occasions when I have a scheduling conflict and have missed a class, he encourages me to make it a priority because of the noticeable difference in my mind, body, and spirit.
You are a Jazzercise instructor. How does Pilates compliment your Jazzercise workouts?
I feel Pilates has helped me to become a better Jazzercise instructor and I definitely incorporate some of the practices of Pilates in my routines. I have learned through Pilates the importance of breathing during strength training and how it can turn a core workout into so much more. When working on my ab routines, I have taught my class the importance of the “C” curve when contracting the abdominal muscles. I am also very proud of my planks now because of Pilates.
If you could get two friends into Pilates who would they be and why? (names removed for privacy)
If I could invite two friends to Pilates, they would be my friend and my family member . My friend has a chronic disease that affects her joints. She has to be very careful with the type of exercise she does. I think Pilates would be wonderful for her. It would help her improve her balance while helping her to build strong lean muscles without the stress on her joints.
I would love to see my family member start taking Pilates classes. As she's gotten older, she has stopped participating in activities and sports. I think Pilates would be wonderful for her. It would help her improve her balance and flexibility, while helping her to build strength and stability in her muscles. Pilates is a lifelong exercise that is beneficial at any age.
A note from the studio:
Paige brings a cheerful smile every time she enters the studio. Even when she is not feeling well or is having a tough day, her smile is still there. Paige has a great attitude when it comes to physical challenge. Even something that is hard for is not of of her reach. She is willing to try anything at keep at it until she gets it. Thanks for brightening the studio Paige!
